A breeze with a voice in it

November 15, 2011

Imagine a sheltered 19 year old girl away from home on her very first teaching job. The day has settled down for a moment, and she finds herself miraculously alone, and takes the time to write.

"Well, here I am at Roe-Head, it is seven o'clock at night. The young ladies are all at their (more…)

The Road

November 15, 2011

How long does it take to get any good at writing? I don’t know, actually. I’m sure it varies from person to person. I only know how long it took me. I wrote a one act play in the second grade. I wrote it using one of those fat first grade pencils. (more…)

Why YA?

November 15, 2011

I don’t know that I do, actually. I don’t really sit down to consciously write “young adult” novels. I like to think that my books can be read by anyone old enough (or young enough) to enjoy them. But teen books—that’s just what tends to come out when I start (more…)

Will the novel live forever?

November 15, 2011

Will the novel as we know it live forever, or are we standing on the precipice of some strange new digital world where each ‘page’ will leap with interactive pictures, clickable links, music, intrusive explanatory passages? Will novels ultimately come to resemble something indistinguishable from movies with the author taking on multiple roles as (more…)

unthinking and writing something new

September 10, 2010

I have lots of ideas. Some of them are wonderful. Some of them sound fantastic until I start tinkering with them, only to discover they don't have enough "weight" behind them to carry a whole book. Other ideas sound like they have a lot of potential at first but fade the more I poke at them until they just don't "grab" me anymore. Then there is a kind of third category of ideas (more…)

something i do sometimes

August 29, 2010

I do a lot of searching for stuff on the net. Inevitably, I stumble across conversations in chat forums that have some tangential relationship to what I am searching for. (Or maybe none at all.) Just key words in common.

I stop and read a bit. Often the dates on these conversations are pretty old. I came across one today (more…)

Finishing something

August 25, 2010

Have you ever finished an action that you began many years ago? I once found a box of cassette tapes when I was cleaning something out, tapes from 1982. I popped one of them into one of the last remaining cassette players in western civilization and pressed play and it was in the middle of a song. A song I had been playing two decades ago (more…)

The not so small stuff

August 23, 2010

One of my cats is crying. It's Paco. He does this thing where he cries and cries and you go to see what is the matter, and he has food. Okay, so you open the door to let him outside. He stands there and watches the outside. So you shut the door and go sit back down again, and he starts crying again. So you get up again and this time (more…)

out with the old, in with the huh?

August 19, 2010

How often will I add something here? No idea. But thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my new website.

The house is reasonably quiet for a change. Zach is watching something on TV. My wife has fallen asleep in front of an Errol Flynn movie. The house is a wreck, (more…)
